Syfy Renews 12 MONKEYS for Season 2 with a New Showrunner

     March 12, 2015

It’s a huge understatement to say that there is a lot of great TV on right now, and one of the side effects of that is some series just fall through the cracks. That’s been the case with 12 Monkeys for me — I’ve heard the show is great, I believe you all, but I haven’t gotten around to watching it yet.

But apparently plenty of people have, as Syfy reports the series has been watched by 15 million viewers so far, and has seen noteworthy gains in the Live+3 ratings (that is, on delayed viewing).

It’s not surprising then that the adventure/thriller series has been renewed for a second season (which will air in 2016), but that it’s getting a new showrunner. According to a press release, because current showrunner Natalie Chaidez is working on another new Syfy series, Hunters, Terry Matalas and Travis Ficket, co-executive producers and writers of the pilot, will be stepping in. Dave Howe, Syfy’s President, said of the change,

We are absolutely committed to 12 Monkeys, and have been incredibly impressed by the outstanding critical and audience praise the series has earned. The talent both on and off-screen have delivered a series that has us all on the edge of our seats, providing exactly the smart, exciting storytelling Syfy is known for.

Jeff Wachtel, the President and Chief Content Officer of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, added,

12 Monkeys is a show that has exceeded expectations at every stage. It’s had a great first season creatively, and is building a dedicated audience. We can’t wait to see where – and when! – Terry and Travis will take us next.

The series stars Aaron Stanford, Amanda Schull, and Kirk Acevedo, and will be premiering its ninth episode (out of thirteen for the season) this Friday, March 13th at 9 p.m. You can check out a preview for it here:
