Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in 21 JUMP STREET slice

With directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) 21 Jump Street now filming in New Orleans, the first images of Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in their police uniforms have hit the net.  While the outfits are nothing out of the ordinary, there is one thing worth noting: how much weight Hill has lost!  From the low res pictures, I’d say he’s lost at least forty pounds.  Maybe more.  It’s a considerable change from what he looked like in Get Him to the Greek.

As most of you know, 21 Jump Street tells the story of two young cops (Hill and Tatum) who go undercover to infiltrate a high school. Alongside Hill and Tatum, Ice Cube, Brie Larson, Johnny Simmons and Dave Franco star, with Rob Riggle playing the villain. Also, Johnny Depp will be doing a cameo.  21 Jump Street hits theaters on March 16th 2012.  Hit the jump for the images.

21_Jump_Street_image_Jonah_Hill Last year when I interviewed Hill, I asked what is his character going to be like in Jump Street.  He said:

“I don’t want to get too much into detail, because I don’t want to give you the grand, total 45-minute pitch of the movie, but basically we want to make a really funny, grounded high school movie with action set pieces in it. To me, that’s really cool. When they asked me to remake it, I initially went, “pfft, f*ck that – I’m not doing that. It’s stupid.” Then I thought about it and I watched the show again and revisited it, and the thing I responded to was the concept, because to me there’s a real Back to the Future element in that you get to go back and relive a very important time period in your life, and that’s what I found fascinating. And then, the big idea I had which Mike Bacall and I cracked was that these guys are cops in their mid-20s, and they’ve gained all of this confidence since high school, and then they go back to high school and they immediately revert back to insecure high school students again. That to me was sort of the big idea that we cracked that I really fell in love with about the movie.”

He then explained that they weren’t going to do a spoof movie or make fun of the 80’s (when the show was originally on TV):

“It’s not a spoof of the show. It’s honestly not. It’s not a spoof of the ‘80s, but to me it’s great. If I didn’t know about it I would talk sh*t about it like people on the internet do, but in my opinion, that’s the best thing we have going for us.”
