Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton, Oscar-nominee Ralph Fiennes, and up-and-comers Dakota Johnson and Matthias Schoenaerts compose the core of the cast for director Luca Guadagnino’s latest film, A Bigger Splash. In this first trailer, we meet Swinton and Schoenaerts’s characters: a famous rock star and a filmmaker, who are vacationing (and recovering) together on the remote Italian island of Pantelleria. Their idyllic getaway is soon disrupted when an old friend (Fiennes) and his daughter (Johnson) appear.
The film’s synopsis promises “a whirlwind of jealousy, passion and, ultimately, danger for everyone involved”, and you certainly get the sense of that in this new trailer. The sheer amount of talent on screen should be enough to capture your attention, if not the reimagining of the classic plot seen in Jacques Deray’s La Piscine/The Swimming Pool and Jean Renoir’s La Règle du Jeu/The Rules of the Game, which Guadagnino referenced in a chat with Cineuropa. Look for the film to open in U.S. theaters on May 13, 2016.

Here’s the official synopsis for A Bigger Splash:
Rock legend Marianne Lane is recuperating on the volcanic island of Pantelleria with her partner Paul when iconoclast record producer and old flame Harry unexpectedly arrives with his daughter Penelope and interrupts their holiday, bringing with him an A-bomb blast of nostalgia from which there can be no rescue.
A BIGGER SPLASH is a sensuous portrait of desire, jealousy and rock and roll, under the Mediterranean sun.
Though A Bigger Splash is Swinton’s next film to hit international theaters, she also has a few high profile-pictures in the works. Next up for her is the Coen Brothers’ comedy musical Hail, Caesar! due out in theaters February 5th, 2016, followed by Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange later that November. Another highly anticipated project features Swinton re-teaming with Snowpiercer director Bong Joon-ho for a film that hasn’t officially been announced yet, but is likely the sci-fi adventure drama, Okja. Swinton talked at length about her upcoming projects when our own Christina Radish spoke with her in July, and reconfirmed her team-up with Bong while promoting A Bigger Splash (via Variety):
“I’m already planning more adventures with Bong Joon-ho,” said Swinton, “He is a great master like Luca.”
Though Doctor Strange may be the most anticipated picture on your list of Swinton’s films over the next year, she has a wide variety of projects in her past, present, and future. Do yourself a favor and seek them out; you never know what you might like.
