Director Aaron Schneider has been tapped to helm the true story The Conscientious Objector for Walden Media. The film centers on Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector American to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. For those unaware, a conscientious objector is one who refuses the right to perform military service on the grounds of freedom of thought, conscience, or religion.  Doss refused to kill or even carry a weapon into combat during World War II, though he saved the lives of 75 men at the Battle of Okinawa.

Deadline reports that the film comes from screenwriter Robert Schenkkan, whose credits include the HBO minseries The Pacific and 2002’s The Quiet American. Schneider made his feature debut on the 2009 drama Get Low, an won an Oscar for his short film Two Soldiers. Bill Mechanic, David Permut, and Terry Benedict are producing.
