     October 7, 2015

Join Will Link, Arron Fenton, Mike Medina and Josh Macuga as they breakdown Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 episode 2 “Purpose in the Machine.”

When Fitz discovers a new clue from the monolith the team realizes it’s actually a portal and Simmons is trapped on a far away planet. They decide to enlist the help of an Professor Randolph (Peter MacNicol returning to the show in his Asgardian role) to help them track down the monolith’s origins. Eventually it leads them to an old English castle where they discover a machine that can open the portal. Knowing it might be his only way to get Simmons back, Fitz is willing to dive through it and see if he can save the woman he loves. The episode also marks the return of agent May. She’s busy laying low and helping her father who recently was in a car accident. Seemingly she’s mellowed, but soon the old May returns and we realize she’s trying to protect the people she loves. And finally Ward puts together his plan to get Hydra up and running again, and it involves using the son of one of the organizations great leaders.

In the recap, the crew discusses how being trap on a far away planet might have given Simmons PTSD and possibly even powers. And what planet is that anyway? They explore if Andrew is right in thinking that the agents desperation could lead to mistakes. And with the possible Hunter/Bobbie spinoff on the way, how will Ward’s rebuilding of Hydra affect them. They also take on if Daisy is ready to become a leader and will we ever stop calling her Skye?

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Nick Blood, Adrianne Palicki, Henry Simmons, and Luke Mitchell, and airs Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. on ABC. You can read a full written recap here.
