Alexander Skarsgard, Michael Nyqvist, Frank Grillo and Colin Ford Join Internet Morality Tale DISCONNECT

A quartet of actors have signed on for Henry Alex Rubin’s indie internet-centered drama Disconnect. Variety reports that Alexander Skarsgard (Battleship), Michael Nyqvist (the Swedish Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), Frank Grillo (Warrior) and Colin Ford (We Bought a Zoo) are all attached to star in the flick, with Andrea Riseborough (Never Let Me Go) circling one of the lead roles. Rubin, who’s best known for directing the documentary Murderball, is making his feature directorial debut with the ensemble drama that centers on how the Internet and modern communication impacts, and sometimes ruins, the lives of its characters. Hit the jump for a rundown of how the evil internet influences each character.

Grillo will play a single father trying to protect his child from the dangers of the interwebs with Ford playing his son who deals with emotional pain by talking to another troubled teen online under the pretense of being a teen girl. Nyqvist plays a man who Skarsgard and his wife suspect of taking their identity (Skarsgard apparently gets screwed double by the net), and Riseborough is eyeing the role of a TV reporter who seeks out a story about a young man who poses nude online when she becomes frustrated with her job.

It’s a bit of a rarity to see an Internet morality tale at this point in time. When the Internet first appeared, and no one knew what the hell it was, we had Sandra Bullock in The Net to warn us about the dangers of the information age. But I was a fan of Rubin’s Murderball so maybe there’s more than meets the eye here. On paper, though, it just seems a little too “Movie of the Week.” The indie is being financed for $8-$10 million and is set to begin production next month in New York.

All of the actors involved in Disconnect have major projects coming up. Skarsgard stars in the big-budget board game adaptation Battleship, Nyqvist will be seen in the Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Frank Grillo is filming End of Watch with Jake Gyllenhaal and will star in Ruben Fleischer’s period gangster drama Gangster Squad, Colin Ford stars in Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo, and Riseborough is set for the crime thriller Welcome to the Punch alongside James McAvoy and Mark Strong.
