‘Allied’: Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard Fall in Love, Fight Nazis in Revealing New Trailer

     October 5, 2016

Paramount Pictures has unveiled a new, full-length trailer for Oscar-winning Forest Gump and Back to the Future filmmaker Robert Zemeckis’ World War II thriller Allied, and it’s pretty darn revealing. Scripted by Locke and Peaky Blinders scribe Steven Knight, the film stars Brad Pitt as an American intelligence officer who encounters a French Resistance fighter (Marion Cotillard) in 1942 North Africa. The two are subsequently reunited in London, but their relationship is threatened by…well if you want to know you can watch this new trailer, but if you’d rather stay in the dark you might wanna hold off until you see the movie.

I can’t tell if this trailer is too revealing or if it’s the first good piece of trailer marketing for this film yet. This central story conceit is, indeed, the crux of the dramatic tension in the movie, but if the buildup to this reveal spans 45 minutes or an hour of the film’s runtime, it may be tedious to get there knowing it’s coming.

As Knight previously told Collider’s own Steve Weintraub, the film is inspired by a true story told to him when he was a young man, and it’s certainly curious material for Zemeckis. The filmmaker usually finds some visually spectacular hook for his dramatic fare like Cast Away (the plane crash), Contact (the space travel), or Flight (the plane crash, again), so I’m eager to see what brought him to this particular film. Indeed, while Zemeckis’ motion-capture work on films like A Christmas Carol and Beowulf was a bit tiring, the guy is undeniably ambitious, so to seem him tackling spy territory with Pitt and Cotillard in tow is reason enough to see this thing.

Check out the new trailer below. Allied also stars Jared Harris, Simon McBurney, Lizzy Caplan, and Matthew Goode and opens in theaters on November 23rd.
