Angelina Jolie to Next Direct Richard Leakey Biopic AFRICA; Roger Deakins Will Act as Cinematographer

     September 19, 2014

Angelina Jolie is showing no signs of slowing down as a filmmaker.  After making her debut with 2011’s In the Land of Blood and Honey, Jolie won the highly coveted director’s job of the World War II drama Unbroken.  She put together a top-notch team including screenwriters Joel and Ethan Coen and cinematographer Roger Deakins, and while that highly anticipated film is slated to hit theaters in December, Jolie is already hard at work on her next directorial effort, the small-scale drama By the Sea starring herself and Brad Pitt.  But now, in the midst of shooting one film and readying another for release, Jolie is already lining up her next next film as a director: Africa.  Jolie has signed on to direct the biopic of paleo-archeologist Richard Leakey, who devoted his life to combating elephant and rhino poaching.

Hit the jump for more on the project, including the news that Deakins will be putting his genius to work in capturing the African landscape.

Additionally, THR adds that cinematographer Roger Deakins will reteam with Jolie on the film.  This is highly exciting news, as one can only imagine the kind of images Deakins will capture from the gorgeous continent.  Though she only has two films under her belt thus far, Jolie is quickly building up quite a resume as a filmmaker.

This isn’t the only poaching-centric film in the works, as Leonardo DiCaprioTobey Maguire, and Tom Hardy are producing an anti-poaching drama at Warner Bros.  That movie has been in the works for some time now, but it looks like Jolie’s pic will beat them to the punch.
