Extended ANT-MAN TV Spot Features Lots of New Footage, Humor

     June 2, 2015

Marvel Studios has debuted a new extended TV spot for Ant-Man, their second film of 2015, and it’s refreshingly different than what we’ve seen before. There’s not only a lot of new footage to be found in the promo, but also a playful, humorous tone that was largely absent from the previous two trailers. In Phase Two, Marvel attempted to tackle specific genres with its movies—political thriller for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, space opera for Guardians of the Galaxy, etc.—and when Edgar Wright was directing Ant-Man, the hope/thinking was that this would be Marvel’s version of a heist comedy.

While many have worried about the film following Wright’s departure (there’s a shot in this TV spot straight from Wright’s proof-of-concept tests), this new promo certainly highlights some welcome humor and even a different kind of sonic palette, which is promising.

It feels a bit like Ant-Man is the “forgotten” Marvel movie and the marketing hasn’t been near as intense as it was for The Winter Soldier or Avengers: Age of Ultron, but now that we’re a little over a month away from release and Disney has Tomorrowland behind them, I’m curious to see how they plan to sell this movie to audiences at large in the home stretch.

Take a look at the new Ant-Man TV spot below, via Marvel, and if you missed the batch of new images click here. Directed by Peyton Reed, the film stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Michael Pena, and Bobby Cannavale. Ant-Man opens in theaters on July 17th.

Here’s the official synopsis:

The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man.” Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
