Watch: ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Featurette Explains the Movie’s Mythology

     November 7, 2016

One movie that’s escaped us is Assassin’s Creed, the cinematic adaptation of the popular video game franchise. It’s opening in theaters next month, but with everything going on from Doctor Strange to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to the DC films and beyond, chances are you might’ve forgotten about this one. (Psst! I did.) Well, now there’s a featurette that delves deeper into the mythology the film is trying to create, while reminding us all that, yes, this is still happening.

Assassin’s Creed stars Michael Fassbender, who’s a pretty stellar actor — even when he’s playing Magneto (X-Men) or an indie musician with a giant fake head over his own (Frank). Here, he plays Callum Lynch, who, according to the featurette, is part of the last bloodline of Assassins. These shadowy warriors believe mankind should have freewill, while their adversaries, The Templars, strive to attain power.

Watch the featurette below.

Fassbender is teaming with his Macbeth family, including director Justin Kurtzel and actress Marion Cotillard. There’s also Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling, and Ariane Labed (who replaced Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander as the female lead) in the cast. So, perhaps it’s the marketing that hasn’t been as intriguing as fans might’ve hoped. In an underwhelming year filled with mediocre blockbusters, this just looks like another one to add to the dung heap.

But, if only to stay positive, perhaps this will surprise us.

Assassin’s Creed will open in theaters on December 21st. Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.
