‘Assassin’s Creed’ Cast Discusses the Assault on Freedoms in 2016

     December 19, 2016

While most will leave Assassin’s Creed discussing whether or not it’s the best video game to film adaptation yet (and whether they want a sequel), I left with a specific quote from the film stuck in my head. The line is spoken by an elite member of a secret society of the Templars (played by Charlotte Rampling) to another Templar (Jeremy Irons) who’s heading up a research team to “eradicate violence”. Rampling says, “It’s 2016. No one cares about freedom.”

Currently, we’re discussing Russian hacking and releasing of information in hopes of swaying American democracy, nationalist politicians are prepared to sweep elections in Europe, Aleppo is being bombed to bits, Black Lives Matter is still trying to convince a nation that black lives matter and many women and LGBT people are concerned about the future decisions of who’s placed in the Supreme Court. Freedom is definitely a major concern for millions and millions of people. So, while I asked other questions about the film, I did want to ask the director (Justin Kurzel) and the stars of the film, Michael FassbenderMarion Cotillard and Irons, what that line means in the context we currently find ourselves in as a world.

You can view their answer above. The full interviews with Fassbender and Kurzel will also be running this week. The film’s logline is below.

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

ASSASSIN’S CREED stars Academy Award® nominee Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, 12 Years a Slave) and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, La Vie en Rose). The film is directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown, Macbeth); produced by New Regency, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, DMC Films and Kennedy/Marshall; co-financed by RatPac Entertainment and Alpha Pictures; and distributed by 20th Century Fox.
