Things have been rather quiet on the Assassin’s Creed front as of late, but with the crowded holiday release approaching, a bevy of new images have arrived. Macbeth helmer Justin Kurzel directs the video game adaptation, which finds Michael Fassbender playing Callum Lynch, a former death row inmate and “patient” at an Abstergo facility where the prisoners are mined for their genetic material via a machine called the Animus. Once hooked up to the Animus, a person can relive the memories of a past ancestor, and for Abstergo, this means discovering the location of highly valuable hidden objects.
The film presents a unique challenge for Fassbender as he’s essentially playing two characters, Callum and his 15th Century Spanish ancestor Aguilar. I visited the set of Assassin’s Creed last year where I learned that Aguilar has very little dialogue and that most of the film takes place in the present-set story. This is in direct contrast to the games, but allows for Kurzel to focus his set piece energy on the gorgeous Spanish landscape while getting into the meat of the story in the icy Abstergo facility.

Here’s the official synopsis for Assassin’s Creed:

Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.
