[Update: An employee’s email account at Ubisoft was hacked, and the trailer that was sent to us from her account turns out to have been a fake. We apologize for the oversight, but instead of removing this article and pretending it didn’t happen, we felt honesty with our readers was the best policy. Our original story follows below, along with an official clip and TV spot.]

A new fan-made trailer for Justin Kurzel‘s Assassin’s Creed, an epic action film that transcends time and memory and is adapted from the hit Ubisoft video game series, has just dropped. The movie’s marketing machine has unleashed a torrent of clips, trailers, images, and behind-the-scenes featurettes showing off the detailed costuming and set-craft while also aiming to educate non-game players on the mythology behind the mayhem. But this trailer is something else entirely.

What starts out as a solid explanation of what the title actually means–the code of the assassins, if you will–soon becomes a full-on music video with lyrics accompanying rave rhythms while action scenes play out across the screen. It’s a bold marketing approach to be sure, but it might just help to get the movie’s message across and to draw some extra attention ahead of the film’s impending release.

Starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Michael K. Williams, and Brendan GleesonAssassin’s Creed opens in theaters on December 21st.

Here’s an official new clip and new TV spot:

Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:

Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.
