‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Featurette Reveals James Spader in His Motion-Capture Suit

     August 26, 2015

Contrary to public opinion, James Spader is not actually an eight-foot-tall super-intelligent robot. So for Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, in which Spader portrayed the title villain, he had to don the unflattering MoCap suit for the entirety of the shoot. Additionally, since Ultron was meant to be quite a bit taller than his human compatriots, Spader had to wear an additional apparatus that featured red lights extended over his head, mimicking his robot character’s eyes so that his co-stars had a point of reference. Since the Maximoff Twins, Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), interacted with Ultron the most on screen, Olsen and Taylor-Johnson had the pleasure of acting opposite the strangely appointed Spader. You can get a peak at this interaction and some behind-the-scenes stories that went with it courtesy of this new featurette.

Also present in this brief look into the production of Avengers: Age of Ultron are Whedon himself, who talks about bringing Olsen’s character Scarlet Witch to life, and Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, who talks about how integral the twins are to the Marvel Universe … which is kind of ironic in hindsight.
