Edgar Wright’s BABY DRIVER Courting Ansel Elgort; Plot Details Possibly Revealed

     January 13, 2015

While “What If?” will always hang over Ant-Man following Edgar Wright‘s departure, I’m happy to look to the future and the director’s next film, Baby Driver, which will be an original picture.  The movie has been on the backburner for some time, and when we reported on it six years ago, the story was described as “a wild spin on the action and crime genre which will be set in the U.S.”  When we learned that Baby Driver would be Wright’s next feature, we also got the description that the movie was “a collision of crime, action, music and sound.”  Today, we might have a more detailed synopsis along with the news that Wright is seeking The Fault in Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort to play the lead with Emma Stone and Michael Douglas possibly being eyed to co-star.

Hit the jump for more.

According to The Tracking Board, the story follows Baby, a baby-faced, “music-obsessed, quiet young man who works as the driver for a rotating group of bank robbers and finds himself on the run when things go sour.”  I could easily see Elgort fitting that description, and Variety says he’s currently circling the role and will probably close the deal.  Logan Lerman and John Boyega also chased the part, so Wright still has no problem attracting talented actors.

Variety also reports that Sony will distribute.

Tracking Board adds that the production also has Stone as their top choice to play Baby’s love interest, and Douglas is being sought to play Baby’s mentor, which would be nice since Wright and Douglas would finally get to work together.

I will note that The Tracking Board’s track record is spotty, so the only thing I would take as hard fact right now is that Elgort is circling Baby Driver, and I think that’s great news.  Elgort’s a talented actor on the rise, and working with Wright can make sure he doesn’t get pigeonholed as a heartthrob for pre-teen girls.
