Julia Roberts Will Produce and Star in Batkid Movie BATKID BEGINS

     January 23, 2015

The documentary Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World doesn’t premiere at Slamdance until tomorrow, but someone already snatched up the remake rights to the film and you’ll never guess who it is.  Julia Roberts.  Submarine just announced that Roberts is now attached to produce the remake with her Red Om Films partners Lisa Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill.  Roberts is also set to star in the film as well.

batkid-beginsJust in case you’re living under a rock or need a quick refresher, Batkid is Miles Scott, a five-year-old leukemia patient who got the opportunity to team up with Batman to save San Francisco from The Penguin and The Riddler courtesy of the Make-A-Wish Foundation in November 2013.  25,000 San Francisco residents came out to participate in the event, which sparked a social media frenzy that apparently reached nearly 2 billion users.

The Batkid Begins documentary director Dana Nachman will be part of the remake as an executive producer along with Josh and Dan Braun of Submarine via the company’s new remake label that’s launching at Sundance called Sub/Version.  Here’s what Nachman had to say about Roberts joining the project:

“It’s thrilling to me that Ms. Roberts and her team watched our film and were so moved by it that they want to dedicate their time and creative capital to make sure the widest audience possible will know and love Miles’ story and the spirit of this intimate special event that went global, as much as we do.”

There’s no mention of a writer so, odds are, the film’s got no script and is a long way off from production, but while we wait for the project to solidify further, we’ve still got Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World beginning its festival run tomorrow.  You can check out the trailer for the documentary below.
