Ben Affleck on Batman’s Anger Issues in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

     September 15, 2014

Most of the Avengers know how to have some fun and the Guardians of the Galaxy certainly enjoy their fair share of messing around, but Batman’s a different story.  Bruce Wayne makes an effort to be cordial and dishes out the occasional smile, but Batman is all business all the time, so between that, his demeanor and his growl, he can come across as a pretty angry guy.

While discussing playing the Caped Crusader in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Ben Affleck spoke to Batman’s anger issues and connected them to his own.  Hit the jump to find out how Affleck relates to Batman’s rage.  Batman v Superman hits theaters on March 25, 2016 and also stars Henry CavillGal GadotJesse EisenbergAmy AdamsLaurence FishburneJason MomoaHolly HunterScoot McNairy and Jeremy Irons.

ben-affleck-batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justiceWhile discussing Batman’s anger with The Sunday Times, Affleck noted:

“I think it’s a necessity, historically, in the tradition of these films.”

He also offered some insight into his own personal anger issues:

“For me, anger is so deeply buried and contained that when it does kind of come out, it comes out in stronger bursts.  I tend to be respectful, polite, get along, put up with, put up with, put up with … then, when it finally emerges, it’s not something I have a ton of control over.  I’m not gonna go into a Wolverine berserker rage, but I do have a, I do … That is an interesting thing that you point out.  That’s my personality … By the way, that’s a character flaw, I think.  I should sit down and say, ‘Listen, I just want to let you know what happened there wasn’t OK’, instead of going, let it go, let it go, let it go … ‘Ah, that’s not a big deal’, until finally you just pop!”

Snapping at people when you lose it is never a good thing, but at least Affleck doesn’t growl when he gets angry.  Perhaps expressing Batman’s rage by tapping into his own will give this rendition an especially human, relatable quality.
