‘Batman v Superman’: Another New TV Spot Reveals Bruce Wayne v Clark Kent

     January 10, 2016

Last night, Warner Bros. released the first official TV spot for director Zack Snyder’s superhero epic Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The clip had a narrow focus, showing us a tantalizing scene in which Batman tries to hit Superman with the Batmobile and, well, fails spectacularly. But Warner Bros. also released a second TV spot as well, one that uses footage we’ve already seen before to highlight a different aspect of the film’s combative title.

Of course this movie will give us at least one big fight scene between Batman and Superman, but what’s almost more compelling is the prospect of Bruce Wayne versus Clark Kent. That’s the focus of this second TV spot, which is a shortened version of the scene that opens the most recent trailer for the film. There’s a certain hotheadedness to the conversation between the billionaire playboy and the humble Daily Planet reporter, and I’m curious to see how Snyder handles these secret identities in the film.

This is one arena in which Warner Bros. has the undisputed advantage over Marvel, given that the Marvel Studios films have largely eschewed the “secret identity” dynamic ever since the first Iron Man. That gives WB the opportunity to play around with the fact that these characters are living double lives, and seeing how that changes their interactions with one another. Will Superman inherently know that Bruce Wayne is Batman, or will he have to do some old fashioned reporting? Do Batman’s detective skills uncover the fact that this dangerous alien is living a “normal” life as a reporter at a major newspaper? Questions that I’m eager to see uncovered when the film hits theaters in a couple of months.

Watch the “new” TV spot below, via Warner Bros., and sound off with your thoughts on the secret identities aspect of the film in the comments. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in theaters on March 25th and stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Jesse Eisenberg, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Holly Hunter, and Scoot McNairy.
