     March 2, 2016

One of the best movies of 2014 is headed for the small screen in a new Disney XD series. Disney’s Oscar-winning animated adaptation of Man of Action’s Marvel comic Big Hero 6 brought the story of teenage tech genius Hiro and his inflatable robot pal Baymax to the big screen, resulting in critical acclaim and a global box office of over $650 million. Now, Disney XD has announced that Big Hero 6: The Series has started production with an eye towards a 2017 debut around the world.

Emmy Award-winning producers Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley, creators and executive producers Kim Possible, will serve as the series’ executive producers. Also joining the team is their colleague Nick Filippi, an Emmy Award winner who will serve as executive producer and supervising director. There’s no word yet on the voice cast or if any of the film’s talent will be reprising their roles.

Now, as for Big Hero 6: The Series:

Produced by Disney Television Animation, the series picks up immediately following the events in the feature film, and continues the adventures and friendship of 14-year-old tech genius Hiro and his compassionate, cutting-edge robot Baymax. Alongside Hiro and Baymax on their journey are control freak Wasabi, scientist Honey Lemon, fanboy Fred and no-nonsense Go Go, who together form the legendary superhero team, Big Hero 6. As the new prodigy at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, Hiro now faces daunting academic challenges and the social trials of being the little man on campus. Off campus, the stakes are raised for the high-tech heroes as they must protect their city from an array of scientifically enhanced villains.

Here’s what Disney Channel Worldwide President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh had to say about the project:
