New Teaser for ‘The Birth of a Nation’ Sows the Seeds of Rebellion

     May 17, 2016

Starring, written, and directed by Nate Parker, The Birth of a Nation is continuing its slow rollout leading up to its debut in theaters this fall. A new teaser trailer has emerged for the Sundance award-winner of both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize for a Dramatic Feature, a short video that acts as half motion poster and half rallying cry for followers to join in the rebellion. It’s surprisingly powerful for its short runtime, even out of context and without Parker’s visage on screen. To get a better sense of how effective the full film is, be sure to check out Matt Goldberg’s review from Sundance here.

The Birth of a Nation, a drama about Nat Turner’s slave rebellion in the antebellum South, stirred up great interest at Sundance in January to the tune of a $17.5 million deal with Fox Searchlight. Here’s what the company’s Presidents Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula had to say about the acquisition:

“From the moment we saw this film we knew we wanted to join Nate Parker in fulfilling his vision as the film’s portrayal of injustice is unfortunately still relevant today.  His dedication and artistry in revitalizing Nat Turner’s legacy and place in history has resulted in an extraordinarily compelling and moving film that delivers on every level.  The ensemble cast, led by Nate Parker, is committed and exceptional.”
