blue is the warmest color

IFC Films has released the trailer for Blue Is the Warmest Color.  The movie centers on Adele (Adèle Exarchopoulos), a young woman who begins to discover her sexuality and eventually falls in love with the alluring Emma (Léa Seydoux).  The film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival (the festival’s top prize), and for the first time it was awarded not only to the director (Abdellatif Kechiche), but the two lead actresses as well.  While the film will likely garner attention for the explicit sex scenes between Adele and Emma (the movie has an NC-17 rating), it’s an incredibly mature, deliberate, and heartbreaking work with an astonishing performance from Exarchopoulos.  Unfortunately, idiotic Academy rules prevent the movie for being eligible for Best Foreign Language Film, which would have helped raised awareness about it in the States.  Keep the flick on your radar even though this trailer has trouble conveying the depth of the story.

Here’s the official synopsis for Blue Is the Warmest Color:

Acclaimed French filmmaker Abdellatif Kechiche’s latest, based on Julie Maroh’s graphic novel, was the sensation of this year’s Cannes Film Festival even before it was awarded the Palme d’Or. Adèle Exarchopoulos is a young woman whose longings and ecstasies and losses are charted across a span of several years. Léa Seydoux (Midnight in Paris) is the older woman who excites her desire and becomes the love of her life. Kechiche’s movie is, like the films of John Cassavetes, an epic of emotional transformation that pulses with gestures, embraces, furtive exchanges, and arias of joy and devastation. It is a profoundly moving hymn to both love and life.
