I get it — there’s a lot of TV, there’s too much even, and you don’t have time to get to everything. Believe me, I’ve watched almost 70 shows this fall. It’s hard! But there are a few shows worth making DV-R space for, and Blunt Talk is one. Series creator Jonathan Ames‘ humor is not for everyone, and it has taken the show a little while (it’s now in its second season) to settle into a rhythm. But it has quietly become one of the best series currently on the air, mostly thanks to its mixture of humor and pathos.
Each of the characters in Blunt Talk (where Patrick Stewart stars as a news show host, Walter Blunt) are awkward dreamers, who live with the hope of finding true love and meaning in their lives. It’s universal, and yet, Blunt Talk also slices these moments up with some often sophomoric humor that kind of wonderfully juxtaposes the sweet and the vulgar in a very unique way.
For those of you who are already watching, you’ll know that Season 2 has seen Jim (Timm Sharp) go through a lot, and so it’s very fun to see him in this clip from “It’s Been Months Since I Kidnapped You” as a ladies’ man (and even better that the act falls apart as soon as he notices Dolly Wells‘ Celia watching him). The clip is also a great example of how the show can be silly and sincere all at once — check it out below:
Blunt Talk airs Sunday nights on Starz alongside Ash vs Evil Dead. Below is the synopsis for this week’s episode:
Episode 205: “It’s Been Months Since I Kidnapped You” Walter and the team travel to a local jail to interview Duncan Adler. Meanwhile, Jim has newfound confidence after a one-night fling.
