‘Booksmart’: Beanie Feldstein on What Landed Her in High School Detention

     May 20, 2019

Let me just say this right up top – I love Olivia Wilde‘s Booksmart. It’s hilarious, super energetic, and features one of my favorite big screen duos in recent years, Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein. In an effort to keep this from turning into another review, I’ll leave it there because now it’s time to put the spotlight on Dever and Feldstein who are an absolute delight on screen and off.

In the movie they play Amy (Dever) and Molly (Feldstein). They’re overachieving teacher’s pets who go out of their way to play by the rules to ensure they get into the best schools possible and lock in bright futures. Trouble is, on the very last day of high school, they come to learn that the classmates they watched party non-stop managed to have a blast and get into great colleges, too. With one last night left before graduation, they decide it’s now or never; they’re going to let loose and live it up this one last night.

Given the high school setting of Booksmart and that I’m betting you’re going to want to know more about Dever and Feldstein after you see the film, I opted to take a little trip down memory lane and revisit some of their school experiences. Check out the video at the top of this article to find out if they were ever sent to the principal’s office, if they ever threw a house party and so much more. If you want to hear even more about Booksmart from the cast, Wilde and screenwriter Katie Silberman, you can check out my interview with the whole group at SXSW right here. And if you want to hear me babble on about how much I adore this movie, click here to give the video review a watch, too.

Here’s the official synopsis for Booksmart:

Told from a wildly original, fresh and modern perspective, Booksmart is an unfiltered comedy about high school best friends and the bonds we create that last a lifetime. Capturing the spirit of our times, the film is a coming of age story for a new generation.
