A Good Day to Die Hard turned in a good weekend at the box office with $25 million, netting $33 million since its Valentine’s Day opening.  It looked like the Nicholas Sparks adaptation Safe Haven was going to secure the second spot with $21 million, but Identity Thief stole the silver with $23 million.  The comedy, starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, now has $70 million in just 10 days.  Check out the full rundown of the weekend’s Top 10 below:

escape-from-planet-earth-movieWhile it wasn’t much of a surprise that A Good Day to Die Hard would claim the top box office spot, the overwhelmingly negative reviews might have tempered audience expectations a bit.  Matt’s review was in line with critics, but the disparity with Die Hard fans was apparently worth over $30 million.  Identity Thief is another example of a critical whipping post that is making absolute box office bank while apparently entertaining fans.  The trend continues with fans of Nicholas Sparks coming out in droves with the romantic drama Safe Haven harboring over $30 million since Valentine’s Day.

Rounding out the top five is Escape from Planet Earth, the new release and first animated theatrical feature from Canada’s Rainmaker Entertainment and Jonathan Levine’s zomromcom Warm Bodies.  The new release of Richard LaGravenese’s Beautiful Creatures had an ugly opening, landing outside the top five at number six with about $7.5 million.  If the filmmakers were hoping that this supernatural romance adaptation would be the next Twilight, they were left heartbroken this Valentine’s Day weekend.
