Another cast member has been added to the ensemble of Marvel’s sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  We recently learned the surprising news that Robert Redford is in negotiations to play a high-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. officer in the follow-up, and now it appears that another villain is being added to the ranks.  Sebastian Stan is already set to return as the titular soldier and Frank Grillo is poised to play the angatonist Crossbones, but now word comes that the villain Batroc the Leaper will also be appearing onscreen with UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre reportedly tapped to bring him to life.  Hit the jump for more.

batroc-the-leaperThe folks over at Latino Review are reporting that Georges St-Pierre, a Canadian mixed martial artist and UFC Welterweight Champion, has been cast in the role of Batroc the Leaper in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  Here’s what Marvel has to say about the character:

Batroc has no superhuman powers, but he is one of the most formidable unarmed combatants in the world. He has mastered numerous martial arts and is perhaps the world’s leading master of savate, the French art of foot-fighting. He is an accomplished thief and smuggler with extensive military training. He currently carries a pair of whip-canes, which he uses with great skill.

Batroc posses immense leg strength that allows him to leap great distances (hence the name) and is also an Olympic weightlifter, so it’s clear that Marvel was keen on casting someone who could bring the character’s physical abilities to life in a realistic manner.  It’s unknown how directors Joe and Anthony Russo plan on using the character in The Winter Soldier, but given the already crowded ensemble one assumes Batroc won’t have the largest of roles.  Production on Captain America: The Winter Soldier is poised to get underway in May in anticipation of the film’s April 4, 2014 release date.
