‘Captain Marvel’ Directors on Why They Didn’t Edit the Superhero Film Themselves

     March 7, 2019

Captain Marvel marks quite the leap for Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the directors behind SugarIt’s Kind of a Funny Story, and Mississippi Grind. (And really, jumping into a Marvel movie is likely a major leap for most directors out there.) We’re talking about big budget studio fare that’s also part of one of the biggest film franchises out there. Last summer when I visited the set of Captain Marvel, Boden and Fleck did note that while this MCU movie is wildly different from their other films, it still comes down to telling stories and loving their characters. But even then, there must be countless parts of the process that changed the way Boden and Fleck usually operate – beginning with the fact that when they signed on to direct Captain Marvel, the lead had already been cast.

Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. At the start of the film, she’s a Kree warrior fighting with a Special Forces-like group known as Star Force in the Kree-Skrull War. She doesn’t remember her human past but ultimately, winds up crash landing back on Earth and that’s where she runs into MCU mainstay Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and also starts to tap back into her former life as an Air Force pilot.

With Captain Marvel makings its way into theaters on March 8th, I got the chance to chat with Boden and Fleck so opted to ask them about jumping into a project after certain casting already took place, the most surprising part of directing a Marvel movie, why they changed the cat’s name from Chewie to Goose, and more! You can hear about all of that in the video interview at the top of this article.

Here’s the official synopsis for Captain Marvel:

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.
