‘Captain Marvel’: Emily Blunt Comments on Casting Rumors

     September 16, 2015

Once upon a time, Emily Blunt was going to play Black Widow, but Fox forced a contract option on her, locked her into Gulliver’s Travels, Scarlett Johansson went on to get the part, and the rest is history. But fans still want to see Blunt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and her name has been getting rumored for Captain Marvel.

Steve spoke to Blunt at TIFF for Sicario (click here to read Adam’s review, and click here for his thoughts on its Oscar chances), and briefly asked about Captain Marvel. Here’s the video:

captain-marvel-comics-coverNoting the fan interest, Steve asked Blunt directly what it would take to get Blunt to play the Marvel superhero:

EMILY BLUNT: No one has approached me as Captain Marvel! I have received not one phone call about Captain Marvel.

Collider: But you do know the character.

BLUNT: I don’t know who she is. I’m sorry [laughs]. I don’t know comic book characters. They’re not my forte.

She went on to say that she’s not against superhero roles, but it’s the writing that’s important:

BLUNT: It would just have to be a great part. It’s not necessarily that I’m desperate to be in a Marvel movie or desperate to be a in a different movie. It’s all dependent on the part for me.

And that’s what should be important to all of us. The problem with fan casting is that it’s done independent of a script, a director, or any of the important details that surround a character. Blunt is a terrific actress with fantastic range, but no one knows how Marvel plans to approach Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. Unfortunately, the calculus for many fans doesn’t seem to extend beyond a talented actor or actress matching up with the age and ethnicity of a particular character.

Will Blunt get cast as Captain Marvel eventually? Perhaps. But in the mean time, let’s all keep an open mind on who should play the part, and hope that Marvel is doing justice to the character on the page before they start figuring out whom to cast.
