New CHAPPIE Trailer: Neill Blomkamp’s Latest Looks Like SHORT CIRCUIT Meets ROBOCOP

     January 9, 2015

A new Chappie trailer has been released, and I can’t decide if the film looks achingly earnest or painfully cheesy.  The film tells the story of a robot (voiced by Sharlto Copley) who’s part of a police force, but imbued with artificial intelligence that makes him question his purpose, and also provides a serious problem for the company that created him.  This trailer makes it look like Neill Blomkamp‘s sci-fi film is trying to blend the niceties of a self-awareness story (Chappie can make art!) with an action film (the movie appears to have its own version of ED-209), and I don’t know if it’s going to work.  The trailer also provides a better idea of the characters played by Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, and Sigourney Weaver, who behaves like she’s the cousin of Jodie Foster’s hard-assed overlord from Elysium.

Hit the jump to check out the new Chappie trailer.  The film opens March 27th, and also stars NinjaYo-Landi Vi$$er, and Jose Pablo CantilloClick here for Steve’s interview with producer Simon Kinberg, who says it’s “likely the most provocative studio movie you’ll ever see” (if it is, they’re certainly doing a good job of covering it up).

Here’s the official synopsis for Chappie:

Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy.  Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man.  But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.
