Christoph Waltz Talks ‘Spectre’, Sam Mendes, Daniel Craig’s Bond, and More

     October 6, 2015

Like all of you, I’m a huge fan of Christoph Waltz. So when Sony announced he would be playing a big role in director Sam Mendes new James Bond film Spectre, arriving in theaters November 6th, I was as excited as a teenage girl at a One Direction concert. After all, a movie is only as good as its antagonist, and while we’re not exactly sure who Franz Oberhauser (Waltz) is in relation to James Bond (Daniel Craig), from the latest trailers it’s pretty clear he’s not a friend.

However, when I got to visit the set of Spectre earlier this year when the movie was filming in Mexico City, Christoph Waltz was extremely guarded about saying too much. I’m surprised he was willing to admit he was in the movie. Since I knew going in he was not going to say much, I decided to ask him about the casting process, how he prepares for a role, working with Sam Mendes, his thoughts on the Bond franchise before getting involved, and more.

Finally, if you were nervous the upcoming James Bond film would somehow disappoint, everything I saw and learned during my set visit makes me extremely confident that the sequel will be something special. For more on the film, here’s a description of the awesome-sounding opening chase sequence that will make up between 12 and 15 minutes of screen time!

Here’s what Christoph Waltz had to say. Look for my video interviews with Lea Seydoux (Madeleine Swann) and Dave Bautista (Mr. Hinx) later this week.

Christoph Waltz:

  • Where and when did he find out he landed the role as a bond villain?
  • Did Sam Mendes give him anything to watch or do in preparation for the role?
  • Talks about his process when he prepares for a part.
  • What were his thoughts on the Bond franchise before getting involved?
  • Talks about how every Bond film is unique.
  • Talks about how Daniel Craig’s Bond is different from previous incarnations.
  • Did he know his character would be revealed in the teaser trailer before it debuted?
