Clifton Collins Jr. to Fight Demons in J.T. Petty’s HELLBENDERS

     March 14, 2011

The newest cast addition to J.T. Petty’s supernatural project, Hellbenders, is Clifton Collins Jr. (NBC’s The Event). Hellbenders, based on a graphic novel written by Petty, is about a group of demonologists in Brooklyn battling the forces of evil. Variety reports that the versatile Collins will join Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption) and Dan Fogler (Take Me Home Tonight) in the horror/comedy written and directed by Petty. Earlier this year, Petty also sold a spec script to Sony entitled Inherit the Earth, based off the comic Zombies vs Robots. The 3D Hellbenders will start filming next week and is being produced through Circle of Confusion. Hit the jump for more info on the project.

clifton-collins-jr-imageWhile Collins’ addition to the cast is welcome, that doesn’t exactly give us an idea of how he’ll play his character. He has had dramatic turns on television, both in The Event and in The Shield. But he also has a comedic side, which he has shown in Extract and Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

Clancy Brown, on the other hand, most often plays an intimidating character and is known for his signature voice. Hellbenders will reteam Brown with Petty, who last worked together in 2008’s The Burrowers. Dan Fogler is a lock to add some comedic flavor to the film. He can be seen in Take Me Home Tonight and heard in Mars Needs Moms, both in theaters now.

Plot details on the film are pretty thin, but the basic premise of priests battling the forces of evil shows potential. In a recent interview with Fangoria, FX artist Brian Spears had this to say about working on the project:

“It’s about rogue priests who fight evil and do exorcisms—sort of like THE HANGOVER meets THE EXORCIST. We’re doing very stylized possession makeups. It’s not going to be like THE EXORCIST, or a lot of the other movies of that type; there’s a specific look that I can’t really talk about right now. It’s definitely different.”

So all-in-all, pretty intriguing stuff. Hellbenders starts production next week.
