New Clip from CLOUD ATLAS Shows the Switching Between Plotlines

     September 28, 2012

As I noted in my review, one of the most remarkable aspects of Cloud Atlas is how it moves between its six plotlines.  Sometimes the switch is through visual rhyming, an actor’s characters, a movement (like opening a door in one storyline and someone coming out the other side in a different time line), and, as you’ll see in this new clip, thematically.  The movie occasionally goes through all six lines when one character narrates on one of the film’s central themes.  In this case, it’s Dr. Isaac Sachs (Tom Hanks), who’s in the “Half-Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery” storyline, talking about the scientific and philosophical reasons he could have fallen in love with someone he just met.  During his narration, we also see the other five storylines and intersecting characters.  Re-watching this clip, I’m reminded not only of how much I enjoyed the movie, but also Reinhold Heil, Johnny Klimek, and Tom Tykwer‘s score.

Hit the jump to check out the clip (it ends on a spoiler, although what happens is also in the trailer).  The film also stars Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, James D’Arcy, Xun Zhou, Keith David, David Gyasi, Susan Sarandon, and Hugh GrantCloud Atlas opens October 26th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Cloud Atlas:

“Cloud Atlas” explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.
