If you caught my review yesterday, you know I’m a big fan of Cold Hell, the new action-horror hybrid from Oscar-winning filmmaker Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters). Equal parts Giallo-inspired murder mystery and relentless action movie, Cold Hell stars Violetta Schurawlow as Özge, a Turkish-born taxi driver living in Austria, who spends her free time brooding and beating the shit out of people in the ring at her Thai boxing studio. Until one day her life takes a turn for the terrifying when she gets home from a grueling shift behind the wheel and witnesses a grisly murder. Turns out the murderer witnesses her too, and what follows is bloody, brutal game of cat-and-mouse between a maniacal murderer and the ultimate survivor.
Today, we’re happy to share an exclusive clip from the film that shows off the proud inspiration taking from the Gialli. Fair warning, it’s a rather bloody, super murdery clip, so sit this one out if you’re squeamish. Otherwise, get a sneak peek at one of the best action-horror movies I’ve seen in years.
Cold Hell also stars Tobias Moretti, Sammy Sheik, Friedrich von Thun, and Robert Palfrader. It’s available to stream now on Shudder.
Here’s the official synopsis for Cold Hell:
“Özge (Violetta Schurawlow, HEAD FULL OF HONEY) is a young Turkish-born taxi driver, who attends evening classes and is an ambitious Thai-boxer. She trains hard and rarely speaks. One day, Özge witnesses a brutal murder. The suspect is an unhinged serial killer, inspired by extremist Islam. Convinced that the woman has seen him, the two enter a tense life-and-death struggle that will leave neither unscathed.
In his job at the Vienna Police Department, Christian Steiner (Tobias Moretti, THE DARK VALLEY) is often contacted by people of immigrant backgrounds. Years ago, his wife left him – taking their child with her. Since then, he’s been living with his father and caring for him as best he can. Steiner finds it very difficult to trust other people, especially women… but now, one desperately needs his help.”
