Comic-Con 2011: Marvel Sitting Out Hall H At This Year’s Convention

     June 22, 2011

It looks like Marvel won’t be making a big splash at this year’s Comic-Con. Hero Complex now confirms what we’ve been hearing for a while: the studio will not take part in any Hall H panels. While this may come as a bit of a shock, it kind of makes sense. The studio just commenced filming on Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, and they have yet to lock in any timetable or release schedule beyond The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Plus, it’s hard to top last year’s Avengers panel when the entire star-studded cast made an appearance onstage. Though they’ll be absent from Hall H, the studio will still have “a major presence” on the convention floor.

Marvel seems to be falling in line with a lot of the major studios that are sitting out the convention this year. Matt’s write-up a couple of weeks ago detailed how the big studios may be cluing in on the fact that a big reaction at Comic-Con does not equal big box office nationwide. Additionally, Disney’s major releases (John Carter and The Lone Ranger) are skipping the Con in favor of the studio’s own D23 Expo in August, which is being constructed as a rival convention. Nevertheless, plenty of other major films will be at Comic-Con 2011 (The Amazing Spider-Man!), as will Collider, so be sure to check back here starting July 20th for all of our coverage from San Diego.
