CONSTANTINE Trailer Reveals an Easter Egg from the DC Universe

     June 9, 2014

DC Comics is more than doubling down on its upcoming television properties with The Flash, Gotham, and Constantine on the way.  The latter series, which will debut on NBC this fall in the 10pm slot on Fridays, just released a new trailer.  While I’m curious about this particular adaptation, the first trailer was a bit disjointed and chaotic.  Unfortunately, the second trailer is more of the same.  The good news for DC Comics fans is that the show’s creators have worked in at least one Easter egg in this new cut.

Neil Marshall, who just directed last night’s epic Game of Thrones episode, directed the pilot, while Daniel Cerone acts as executive producer alongside David S. Goyer.  The series stars Matt Ryan, Lucy Griffiths, Harold Perrineau, and Charles Halford.  Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.

Watch the new trailer for NBC’s Constantine below, and see if you can spot the Easter egg:

In case you missed it (or weren’t sure what to look for in the first place), here it is:

That certainly appears to be the Helmet of Fate (or Helmet of Nabu), which belongs to DC’s long line of sorcerers taking on the moniker of Doctor Fate.  Originally created in 1940 and first embodied in the character of Kent Nelson, the current iteration is Khalid Ben-Hassin.  There’s no telling if or when the good Doctor will show up in the series, but at least a nod to his famous helm made its way into the footage.

Here’s the official synopsis for Constantine:

Based on the wildly popular  DC Comics series “Hellblazer,” seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine (Matt Ryan, “Criminal Minds”) specializes in giving hell… hell. Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight — or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to leave his do-gooder life behind, but when demons target Liv (Lucy Griffiths, “True Blood”), the daughter of one of Constantine’s oldest friends, he’s reluctantly thrust back into the fray – and he’ll do whatever it takes to save her. Before long, it’s revealed that Liv’s “second sight” — an ability to see the worlds behind our world and predict supernatural occurrences — is a threat to a mysterious new evil that’s rising in the shadows. Now it’s not just Liv who needs protection; the angels are starting to get worried too. So, together, Constantine and Liv must use her power and his skills to travel the country, find the demons that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.
