‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’: Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen Confirmed for Season 9 Return

     November 7, 2016

ted-danson-mary-steenburgen-curb-your-enthusiasmThough we haven’t had many details yet about Larry David bringing Curb Your Enthusiasm back to HBO for Season 9 (after five years, it’s worth noting), it seems like the casting is confirming that most of the originals will be back for the new episodes. Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen — who played fictionalized versions of themselves on the series — are both set to return according to THR, alongside David, Cheryl Hines, Jeff Garlin, and Susie Eastman.

Almost all of those core cast members are currently on TV elsewhere (Danson on The Good Place, Steenburgen on The Last Man on Earth as well as Blunt Talk, Hines on Son of Zorn, Garlin on The Goldbergs), so it’s little wonder that there’s no sense yet of when we might actually see Season 9 due to scheduling. And, those conflicts are also true of the producers as well, since David Mandel has Veep and Alec Berg have Silicon Valley (of course, both are also on HBO).

Fellow EP Jeff Schaffer said a few months ago that,

“It won’t be long. It won’t be long. Geologically speaking, it’ll be a blink of an eye. Whether the next season of Curb came out one year later, three years later, five years later, 20 years later — detailing the petty behavior of the selfish and the self-serving is an evergreen business […]  “We’d love to have everyone back, and I think everyone wants to be back, so it should be business as usual.”

The only major cast member who has not yet been confirmed is J.B. Smoove, who has been an enormous contributor to the show’s humor in its last few seasons. It would be really disappointing if he didn’t return, so hopefully (per Schaffer’s comments) they’ll be able to work something out.

Curb has gone a lot of places and addressed a lot of things throughout its run, although I tend to think that its best seasons are the ones that stay focused on L.A. and the minutia of Larry’s life there (especially my favorites, Season 2 and Season 7). As far as what we might see in Season 9, well, anything is possible, but it will surely be a welcomed return for David.
