DAMIEN: First Teaser For A&E’s THE OMEN Inspired Series Teases the Adult Antichrist

     May 12, 2015

A&E has unveiled the first look trailer for their The Omen inspired series, Damien, and it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. The series, which was originally developed for Lifetime, follows the adult life of Damien Thorne (Bradley James), the iconic Antichrist from the 1976 film. As the teaser’s whispered voiceover indicates (“I bet you don’t remember much. That will change.”) Damien has grown up unaware of his fate, and the series will follow the man as he accepts his destiny. The ten-episode series is written and executive produced by former The Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara.

Last year, before the network switch, Lifetime Executive Vice President and General Manager Rob Sharenow described Mazarra’s take on the character.

“Glen Mazzara has re-imagined him as a dark, romantic, anti-hero and this fresh take blends complex characters with premium storytelling to make something truly original.”

It’s obviously hard to get a read on a series from such a brief teaser trailer, but I can’t say I love what I’m seeing here. The Omen is a true horror classic, and a pair of whispering Rottweilers really makes the whole thing look quite silly. All the same, I’ll reserve judgment until we see some actual footage from the series.

Damien is one of many, many film-to-series adaptations we’ll be seeing in the near future. After the success of shows like Fargo and Bates Motel, both of which nailed the transition between feature film and TV series, and the next year brings adaptations of Minority Report, Uncle Buck and Rush Hour, among others. Here’s hoping this is one of the good ones.

Damien will premiere on A&E in 2016.
