Daniel Craig’s Secret STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Cameo Revealed [Updated]

     May 15, 2015

[Update: We reached out to Pegg and he provided us with the following statement, somewhat clarifying his comments:

Why is everyone leaping on this? It was a rumour last summer, wasn’t it? I read it in the paper. It may be untrue, like most of the other rumours, like Cumberbatch and Cruise being in it.

So according to Pegg, he was simply repeating a rumor he heard previously. If Craig is in the film as a Stormtrooper, it’s not like we’ll have visual confirmation of the cameo anyway (nor is he playing some super secret major role, like Darth Vader’s twin brother), so this is he/isn’t he debate is kind of moot. Our original story follows below.]

It’s no surprise that there was heavy interest from just about any and everyone in Hollywood to be a part of the new Star Wars film. We’ve already heard plenty of stories of people being invited to the set by director J.J. Abrams just to experience the making of the first installment of the new saga, and to be part of film history. One such person is Abrams’ friend and Star Trek actor Simon Pegg, a self-professed Star Wars superfan who’s been vocal about his enthusiasm for Abrams’ take on Star Wars: The Force Awakens and reliance on practical effects.

Since he’s such a huge Star Wars fan, many have wondered whether Pegg has a cameo—either hidden or fully visible—in the film. While he’s been understandably coy, when asked about his involvement in the movie by The Independent, Pegg accidentally let slip another actor who has a juicy cameo: James Bond himself Daniel Craig:

“I wasn’t a Stormtrooper. Daniel Craig, he was a Stormtrooper. I shouldn’t have said that.”

This is kind of brilliant. I doubt we’ll even see Craig’s face in the film, but it’s fun to know that Abrams was entirely game to have the actor don a Stormtrooper mask and blend into the crowd, earning his own secret place in Star Wars lore. And now begins the hunt to spot which trooper is Craig when the movie opens on December 18th.
