First Official Image of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

     August 5, 2011

Yesterday, we got our first look at Henry Cavill as Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.  Today, Warner Bros. has released the first official image of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.  I hope we’re not looking at the final Catwoman costume since there’s nothing particularly cat-like about it.  It looks like Anne Hathaway was watching 3DTV and left her glasses on when she hopped on the Bat-pod.  I’ve over-analyze this image more, but I leave that to you good people.  I imagine that Catwoman scenes are about to start filming in the streets of Pittsburgh and Warners wanted to get an official image out before all the cell-phone snappers started releasing low-quality versions for us to dissect.  We’re still going to do that anyway just like we did with these set photos of Bane fighting Batman.

Again, I hope this isn’t the final look but I have a sneaking suspicion that it is.  The image was release on the official Dark Knight Rises website and the image is titled “selina_kyle” (Catwoman’s alter-ego).  Yes, the “goggles” (seriously, they look like the glasses you get with a 3D television) are a part of the recent Catwoman costume but so are cat-ears and claws.  The larger point is that perhaps Nolan can’t find a reason for that design or even a character with the name “Catwoman” to exist in his world.  I’m not asking for a Batman Returns or Catwoman design (a t-shirt reading “I am Catwoman and this is my costume” would be better than Halle Berry’s Catwoman costume), but Nolan’s insistence on grounding his Batman movies in reality really kicks the wind out of some fantastical designs.  However, he found a way to dress the Joker in purple and he’s given Bane (Tom Hardy) a goofy mask, so I don’t see why Catwoman can’t get a costume that has a little comic-book flair to it.
