David Fincher in Talks to Direct Steve Jobs Biopic Written by Aaron Sorkin

     February 26, 2014

The last time director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin teamed up to tell the story of a prickly tech pioneer the results were impressive to say the least.  Now The Social Network duo might be turning their attention from Mark Zuckerberg to Steve Jobs.  A couple years ago, Sorkin signed on to write a screenplay on Jobs’ official biography, Steve Jobs.  However, unlike the silly Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher, Sorkin had a unique take on the material by writing it in the form of three, 30-minute scenes.  It’s a bold, simple design that the late Apple founder probably could have appreciated.

And now Fincher might be coming on board to direct.  Hit the jump for more.

According to Variety, Fincher is in early talks to direct the movie.  Provided that Fincher approves of Sorkin’s take (the behind-the-scenes material on The Social Network Blu-ray shows that the two work well together), here’s what the screenwriter told The Daily Beast he has in store:

“I hope I don’t get killed by the studio for giving too much away,” Sorkin said, “but this entire movie is going to be three scenes, and three scenes only, that all take place in real time.”

Real time, Sorkin said, “is when a half hour for you in the audience is the same as a half hour for the character on the screen. There will be no time cuts. Each of these three scenes is going to take place before a product launch—backstage before a product launch. The first one being the Mac, the second one being NeXT (after he had left Apple), and the third one being the iPod.”

I’m not a huge Steve Jobs fan (I like Apple products; I don’t revere the guy who ran the company), but a re-teaming of Fincher and Sorkin is irresistible.

Fincher is currently doing post-production on Gone Girl, so if he does decide to take the gig, Variety says filming probably won’t begin until later this year, although I assume it would have to wait until 2015 since Gone Girl opens in October, and Fincher will be busy doing press.
