‘John Wick’ Co-Director David Leitch to Helm ‘Coldest City’ Solo

     October 2, 2015

We recently reported that a sequel to John Wick – the indie action movie starring Keanu Reeves – was on the way with co-directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch back at the helm. Leitch, who was also a producer on the original film, did not receive a director’s credit for it; now it’s looking like he’ll only be involved with John Wick 2 in an Executive Producer capacity. A few days ago, Steve broke the news that Stahelski would be directing the action sequel on his own, but since the duo has been offered quite a few other projects to work on, Leitch will be directing his own feature as well.

As The Wrap reports, Leitch has exited John Wick 2’s co-directing duties so that he can helm The Coldest City, Focus Features’ spy thriller starring Charlize Theron. Both Stahelski and Leitch were previously attached to direct the picture, but now it appears they’ll be splitting the workload. John Wick 2 is scheduled to start production this fall, and with The Coldest City now shooting in Germany this November, the directing duo thought it best to divide and conquer; it’s worth mentioning that they came to this decision in an amicable manner.

As for The Coldest City, Kurt Johnstad scripted the adaptation of the Antony Johnston Oni Press graphic novel of the same name. The thriller revolves around a super spy (Theron) who is spurred into action when an underground MI6 officer is killed just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Her character must find a list he was smuggling into the West to protect herself and the counter-intelligence community. Theron will also produce the project. Production starts November 16th in Budapest before shooting moves to Berlin.

Leitch and Stahelski’s other projects include directing Chris Pratt in Cowboy Ninja Viking, a deal to direct Sony’s Valiant Comics adaptation Bloodshot, and a Cinemax TV series in the works with Reeves called Rain, which adapts Barry Eisler’s “John Rain” novels. Busy guys!
