JOY Firmed Up as David O. Russell’s Next Film; December 25, 2015 Release Set

     June 6, 2014

It appears that David O. Russell has settled on his next project.  Earlier this year, we learned that Russell was developing a biopic about Miracle Mop inventor Joy Mangano as a star vehicle for frequent collaborator Jennifer Lawrence.  It looks like the film, titled Joy, has now been firmed up as Russell’s next movie, as 20th Century Fox has set a December 25, 2015 release date for the project.  Long Island native Mangano was a single mother of three when she developed the prototype for her Miracle Mop in 1990.  The product became a huge seller on QVC when Mangano went on air to pitch it, and she now has over 100 patents and a key role on the Home Shopping Network.  Hit the jump for more.

david-o-russell-jennifer-lawrence-joyThough its still a ways away, December 2015 is already starting to get pretty crowded.  X-Mas with Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt kicks off the month on December 11th, then of course we have the Tina Fey/Amy Poehler comedy The Nest squaring off against Star Wars: Episode VII on December 18th, followed by Kung Fu Panda 3 on December 23rd.  On the Christmas Day date of Joy, the Tom Cruise sequel Mission: Impossible 5 is also currently slated for release.

Russell is no stranger to December, as his last two films have opened around the same time in the midst of a heavy awards push.  The filmmaker was really going for the Oscar with American Hustle only to see the film shut out at the ceremony, so it’ll be interesting to see if Joy will follow the same mold or if it might harken back to his earlier, weirder filmography.  Personally, I prefer the Russell of Three Kings to the Russell of Silver Linings Playbook, but he seems keen on his new extremely loose style so one imagines Joy will feel pretty similar to his recent string of hits.

There’s no confirmation that Lawrence is officially signed on to star in the film, but she seemed enthusiastic about the prospect recently.  The actress is currently finishing up filming the final Hunger Games film, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, and she’s poised to return for X-Men: Apocalypse, but she likely won’t have trouble finding time to shoot Joy later this year, especially given her rapport with Russell.
