Upcoming DEADPOOL Film Will Be Part of the X-MEN Movie Universe

     October 6, 2014

Deadpool may be able to break the fourth wall, but he can’t break free of studios’ needs to cross over their superheroes.  According to writer-producer Simon Kinberg, who is basically the overseer of Fox’s superhero properties—X-Men and The Fantastic FourTim Miller‘s upcoming Deadpool will be part of the X-Men universe.  On the one hand, that’s not completely shocking.  Remember, Deadpool is a spinoff.  It’s actually a spinoff of a spinoff even though it won’t be tied to the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and might even poke fun at that film.  But Deadpool’s power to break the fourth wall makes him an odd choice for a future X-Men movie.

Hit the jump for more.  Deadpool opens February 12, 2016.

deadpool-movieHere’s what Kinberg told CBM about Deadpool:

“There’s definitely a sort of overall plan that we’ve all been talking about for the X-Men universe now,” Kinberg explained, “and Deadpool obviously fits into that. So yeah, I guess I would say it’s part of certainly an overall timeline and thought process that goes into these films, some of which is inspired by the comics and some which is inspired by seeing what Marvel’s done with telling a larger tapestry and linking all those movies together, even as they stand independently as well. The same kind of thought is going to go into these X-Men movies at Fox.”

I understand the whole “inspired by” Marvel thing, but it makes me wonder about the direction they’ll be taking Deadpool.  For those who don’t know, what makes Deadpool a standout character in the comics is that he knows he’s in a comic book.  He’s constantly making fun of the tropes, characters, etc.  And in the test footage we saw, he talks directly to the camera and at one point is able to pull out a drawing showing what he’s about to do to a bad guy.

Compare this to the X-Men who are straight superheroes.  Just because the X-Men and Deadpool technically share the same universe, they don’t share the same rules.  It’s not even a matter of tone.  If Deadpool goes into an X-Men movie, will he stop acknowledging the audience and forget he’s in a movie?  Or will he keep doing his thing and the other characters won’t notice?  I guess I’m just missing how Deadpool “obviously fits into” the X-Men universe.
