A new trailer for Pokemon: Detective Pikachu just arrived, but there’s also a new movie poster to go with it, and it’s chock full of Easter eggs. Not only are there a ton of Pokémon from various generations of the franchise scattered throughout this poster, there are also some Easter eggs to be discovered. Some are pretty obvious, like “OAK” spelled out in neon kanji letters, Oak being the surname of characters like Gary and the Professor who first gifts Ash Ketchum (and every other aspiring Pokémon trainer) their starter Pokémon. Look a little closer and you’ll see what appears to be “M2” spray-painted on a water tower, likely a nod to the franchise villain who was just revealed in the aforementioned trailer. See how many you can find!
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Ken Watanabe, Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kathryn Newton (Blockers), director Rob Letterman‘s adaptation arrives May 10th.
First up, here’s the new poster:
Pokémon in this poster include Pikachu (obviously), Bulbasaur, Jigglypuff, Psyduck, Squirtle, Aipom, Charizard, Mr. Mime, Loudred, Snorlax, Treecko, Hoothoot (on a coffee sign) and maybe a trio of Emolga? It’s hard to say. There are some who are hard to make out (like the shadowy figure in the distance atop the skyscraper; Mewtwo maybe?) and others that are barely on screen, like the potential Caterpie crawling over the side of the roof in the foreground. Be sure to let us know which Pokémon you caught!
Here’s the official synopsis for Pokemon: Detective Pikachu:
Fans everywhere can now experience Pikachu on the big screen as never before, as Detective Pikachu, a Pokémon like no other. The film also showcases a wide array of beloved Pokémon characters, each with its own unique abilities and personality.
The story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.
