DGA Nominations Announced; Nominees Include AMERICAN SNIPER, THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, BOYHOOD, and More

The DGA Nominations were announced today, and they were incredibly disheartening.  The worst nomination is Clint Eastwood for American Sniper, a film so lazy that the director couldn’t be bothered to get a realistic looking fake baby.  And while it’s nice to see The Grand Budapest Hotel and Boyhood further cement themselves as frontrunners in the race, Birdman and The Imitation Game are hanging in there.  It also looks like the DGA noms have pretty much halted Selma‘s chances at receiving the recognition it deserves.  Additionally, while The Imitation Game is a good movie, the direction is fairly unremarkable when compared to Gone Girl and Interstellar.

While Adam can do a much better breakdown of how these nominations relate to the Oscar race, history tells us that the DGA nominations almost always line up with the Oscar nominations with perhaps one deviation every year.  It’s still possible that another director could sneak in for a Best Director Oscar nomination, but looking at the state of the race, the current locks appear to be Richard Linklater for Boyhood, Wes Anderson for The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Alejandro G. Inarritu for Birdman.

American Sniper doesn’t open wide until January 16th, but it already has a lot of box office momentum behind it (over $3 million from only 4 theaters since being released on Christmas), and the Academy loves box office

As for Imitation Game, it has The Weinstein Company’s backing, and you should never count out that company and how hard Harvey Weinstein hustles for awards.

The Oscar nominations will be announced Thursday morning.
