Director Gavin Hood talks WOLVERINE

     September 30, 2007

Over the last few days I’ve done press for 6 movies, and over the next week or so I’ll be posting a ton of interviews. But while it’ll take me some time to transcribe entire conversations, I wanted to post some of the highlights today. Up now… Gavin Hood on “Wolverine.”

In case you don’t know who Gavin is… he directed the Oscar winning film “Tsotsi,” and he just directed New Line Cinema’s “Rendition.”

During the one hour press conference Gavin talked a bit on “Wolverine” but he didn’t say anything major. But at the end of the press conference, while a lot of people went up to Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, I went staright to Gavin to ask some direct questions on “Wolverine.”

The reason I waited till the end is he didn’t seem like he wanted to talk about it, and I figured after “Rendition” was done he might open up a bit. While the below comments aren’t anything major, he did confirm the PG-13 rating and that filming would begin in December or January.

The other thing I’ve heard recently, but I didn’t ask it, is that the script is currently being worked on in a major way… with one of my sources telling me it’s an almost page 1 rewrite. So is the script going to be a lot different than this script review we ran not too long ago? I don’t know. But I’m absolutely sure they are working on it now.

Anyway, here’s what Gavin said. And if you’d like to hear the “Rendition” press conference – which features Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Omar Metwally, Igal Naor, Zineb Oukach, Moa Khouas, director, Gavin Hood, and writer, Kelley Sane – click here for a huge MP3 file. My questions on “Wolverine” are at the very end.

Collider: You’re doing Wolverine, can we talk about that for a second?

Gavin Hood: For split second, but I don’t want to overdo it, ’cause it’s just not fair on the process that I’m involved in right now.

Collider: I totally understand. When do you think we will find about other casting or other superheroes that might be in it…things like that?

Gavin Hood: Honestly, we are involved in the casting process, we will not know for a good couple of months. So we start shooting the film in December, possibly January. We are very involved in the process and now and we’ll be casting over the next couple of months. Not this week. Right now I am still doing Rendition. That’s what I can say.

Collider: I’m assuming this is going to be a PG-13 movie?

Gavin Hood: Yeah.

Collider: And how long do you think the shoot’s going to last for?

Gavin Hood: Probably 3 to 4 months. About 4 months of shooting.

Collider: Do you foresee location shooting? Is it all going to be in the US?

Gavin Hood: No. It’s going to be in Australia and New Zealand, and a lot of it in Fox Studios Sydney. And that’s as much as I can give you.

Collider: I appreciate that. Thank you.
