With the Marvel Phase 2 Blu-Ray Box Set arriving on shelves December 8th (you can check out the unboxing here), we’re getting all kinds of interesting tidbits and behind the scenes looks at all the Phase 2 films, and a glimpse ahead at some of Marvel’s upcoming slate as well. In between all the sequels and epic superhero team ups, Marvel is still consistently introducing new heroes and worlds into the ever-growing MCU. Seemingly never content to make one kind of superhero movie, the studios work spans from recognizable, earth based settings of the Avengers films to Thor‘s Asgard to the outer reaches of space in Guardians of the Galaxy. One of the most exciting solo films on the upcoming slate is Doctor Strange, the mystical movie that will thrust the MCU into the world of magic and alternate dimensions, and from the sound of things, get real trippy with it.
Kevin Feige previously cited Neil DeGrasse Tyson‘s Cosmos as a reference point, calling the film “strange in that acid trip way” and promising an exploration of magic through notion of quantum mechanics. Cinematographer Ben Davis said the film is so out there he refers to it as “Marvel’s Fantasia“. Add to that the exceptional cast led Benadict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda freaking Swinton, and Doctor Strange is easily one of the most intriguing Marvel projects to date. Now, we’ve got a new look at the upcoming movie, including some concept art — though not as much as they revealed at D23 over the summer — in the featurette below.
Doctor Strange is currently in production. Filming is taking place in London, New York, Hong Kong, and Kathmandu, Nepal under the direction of Scott Derrickson, (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose). Here’s the official synopsis:
“Doctor Strange” follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.
“Doctor Strange” is the latest film in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Phase 3’s goal—over the course of four years and nine films—is to introduce audiences to new heroes and continue the adventures of fan favorites.
