Rebecca Mader Reveals Which WIZARD OF OZ Characters Might be Coming to ONCE UPON A TIME at WonderCon

     April 20, 2014

During a roundtable interview with press before the Once Upon a Time panel, recurring guest star Rebecca Mader was talking about some of the things she’s excited about seeing as the third season nears its end.  Most of the things she mentioned have already been reported elsewhere, but there was one name she dropped that came as a bit of a surprise.  Warning: There are spoilers ahead for upcoming episodes, so read on after the jump, only if you really want to know.

once-upon-a-time-rebecca-maderMader, who plays a version of the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, said that the show will soon be heading back to Oz and that we’ll meet more characters from that world.  We’ve already met a flying monkey who turned out to be the Wizard (Christopher Gorham) and it’s been reported that Glinda will be introduced soon as well (played by Sunny Mabrey).  But, what about that film’s central character?

“I’m really glad we get to go back to Oz again,” Mader said.  “We get a lot of stuff in Oz and we get to meet Glinda any minute now.  Glinda and Dorothy are coming.  So, that was really fun.  That felt like we were in a whole different TV show.  It just felt like Once Upon a Time in Oz.  There’s really fun stuff coming up with that.”

That’s right, she said Glinda and Dorothy.  Fans have speculated that Snow White and Prince Charming’s coming child (written into the storyline to coincide with Ginnifer Goodwin’s real-life pregnancy) will turn out to be Dorothy, but Mader didn’t go into any further details.  In fact, any mention of the baby or her character’s interest in it was strictly off limits.  She did talk, in general terms, about her impressions of the storyline, though.

once-upon-a-time-lana-parrilla-rebecca-mader“It’s a bit sick, isn’t it?” she said of Zelena’s mysterious objective. “Like, [she’s] after a baby.  It’s so funny.  This character is so messed up.  It’s really, really fun to play.  So, there’s some dark stuff coming, but it’s so soon.  We’re nearly at the end, aren’t we?”

Indeed, after tonight’s episode “Bleeding Through,” only three episodes remain until the season finale, “There’s No Place Like Home.” When I asked Mader if the story will conclude in way that gives the audience hope of seeing her back for Season 4, she played coy.

“I think anything’s possible,” she said with a laugh.  “Because I’m wicked, and wicked always wins.”
