DUMB AND DUMBER TO Eyed for Summer 2014 Release; Peter Farrelly Reveals Story Picks Up in Rhode Island 18 Years After the First Film

     June 19, 2013

While the long-awaited sequel to one new comedy classic is finally poised to hit theaters this December with Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, another highly anticipated follow-up is also finally moving forward.  After a year or so of stops and starts regarding a sequel to Dumb and Dumber, it was announced last night that Dumb and Dumber To has secured financing and distribution at last, with production looking to get underway as early as this fallJim Carrey and Jeff Daniels both reprise their roles from the 1994 film, and writers/directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly are back as well.

Though the Farrelly brothers previously teased a few plot details regarding the follow-up, Peter Farrelly went on the Nerdist podcast and talked a bit more extensively about what Dumb and Dumber To entails, also addressing how difficult it has been to get this thing made.  Moreover, he revealed that the film will likely hit theaters next summer.  Hit the jump to read on.

dumb-and-dumber-2-sequel-jim-carreyJust over a week ago, we learned that Warner Bros. had opted not to move forward with the Dumb and Dumber sequel, with the Farrelly Brothers planning to shop the project elsewhere.  Word broke last night that Universal and Red Granite Pictures are stepping in to produce and financing the pic, but Peter Farrelly told a slightly different version of the story on the Nerdist podcast (via /Film):

“There’s been a lot of press about how Warner Bros doesn’t want to make it, and it has nothing to do with that. In fact, it was originally released by New Line, and New Line now is owned by Warner Bros — so it never really was a Warner Bros thing. And we want …. long story short, we’re going to another studio and there have been negotiations and that’s what’s held this thing up, we’ve been negotiating with two different studios, Warner Bros and New Line, about how to get it out of there.”

dumb-and-dumber-to-jim-carrey-jeff-danielsPeter went on to describe the script that he and his brother wrote as “a little masterpiece,” and then proceeded to seemingly contradict himself a bit with regards to his claim that Warner Bros. did want to make the film:

“I sent you the script. I was hoping you’d read it so I wouldn’t have to sit here and tell you how good it is. But I’m telling you its a little masterpiece. It’s so good, I think it makes the first one better.” .. “We took two years to work on this script. We didn’t want to do it unless it was as good as the first one. We just didn’t want to tarnish the first one, and you know, we didn’t do Dumb and Dumberer — that was done by — which is one reason they [WB?] didn’t want to do this because they did that and it didn’t work.”

While the Farrelly brothers previously revealed that the film would find either Harry or Lloyd being a father, Peter remained a bit more vague when describing the story on the podcast:

“We start in Rhode Island and we pick up today and explain what they’ve been doing the last 18 years. And there is something that happens and we get off to the races quickly.” … ”When you see Dumb and Dumber To, Dumb and Dumber 1 is better because you learn things in Dumb and Dumber To that you knew in Dumb and Dumber 1 but hadn’t put together.  For instance, not giving away too much, Harry always gets revenge. ” … “And when you see the second one, it has a thing that you won’t see coming , and at the end of it, you’ll be like ‘oh my god, I just fell for the exact same thing.'”

peter-bobby-farrelly-dumb-and-dumber-2-sequelFarrelly also confirmed that Harland Williams is poised to reprise his role as the pee-drinking cop from the first film, and he may or may not have been joking when he added that the blind kid will be back as a grown man as well.  Filming is planned to take place in Atlanta, where the production will be taking advantage of Georgia’s tax credits.

While it’s always tough to recapture lightning in a bottle—and the Farrelly brothers’ recent output hasn’t exactly been of the highest quality—I have complete faith in Carrey and Daniels.  Both actors have continued to do impressive work in recent years, with Carrey returning to his goofy roots earlier this year in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.

We should start to hear more details about Dumb and Dumber To soon as production needs to get going later this year before Daniels has to report back to his HBO series The Newsroom.  For now, you can listen to the whole podcast over at Nerdist.com.
