Chris McKay in Negotiations to DM ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Movie for Hasbro/Paramount

     February 21, 2018

While Warner Bros. and DC Comics fans are waiting to see if Chris McKay‘s Nightwing picture gets off the ground, the director of The LEGO Batman Movie is rolling the dice on another project. Hasbro’s production wing AllSpark Pictures and their partner Paramount Pictures recently doubled down on release dates for their upcoming franchise features, like a new G.I. Joe installment and the first Micronauts picture. Another title among those announced is Dungeons & Dragons, a beleaguered picture that may have found some firmer footing now that McKay is in negotiations to direct it.

Variety reports that McKay may end up as the Dungeon Master who will help bring Michael Gilio‘s script to life. Now Variety’s report spells Gillio with two Ls, but assuming it’s actually Gilio, he’s the pen behind the 2001 comedy Kwik Stop, some writing on Jolene, and the unproduced scripts for The Raven and Bitterroot. Once we hear more about the the script and the project overall solidifying, we’ll be sure to share it with you here. For now, Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis are producing the film, which is aimed to be one of the first projects to go into production for the newly repartnered AllSpark Pictures. Dungeons & Dragons is currently on the calendar for a July 23, 2021 release.

In the meantime, McKay is also an executive producer on the The LEGO Movie Sequel, which is currently filming, and The Billion Brick Race. The latter movie has been going through some pre-production pains recently: It originally had Jason Segel (The Muppets) and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) teamed up to write and co-direct the film, but then Warner Bros. handed that film off to Jorge R. Gutierrez (The Book of Life). Gutierrez, however, recently publicized the fact that he’s now off the film, and the studio has yet to announce a replacement. Could they be cooling it with all the LEGO stuff? Could McKay find success with the D&D franchise? Time will tell, but until then, be sure to share your thoughts in the comments!
