Dwayne Johnson To Host New TNT Competition Series THE HERO

     September 5, 2012

While many reality shows seek to tear people down (or apart), TNT is has given the OK for a series tentatively titled The Hero, which seems to want to achieve the opposite.  The new competition series, from Ben Silverman’s Electus and 5×5 Media, is looking to mix up the usual reality formula by rewarding morality.

Wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. “The Rock”) will co-executive produce the project with Dany Garcia, as well as host the competition over the series’ eight-episode run.  The Hero will feature ten cast members who will be assigned missions that will test their abilities (mental, physical and, well, metaphysical I suppose) to see what they can or are able to overcome or sacrifice for the sake of fellow contestants, which sounds a bit like a prolonged game of “no, no, really, you go ahead.”  For more on the project, hit the jump.

dwayne-johnson-the-heroLike many reality competitions currently running, The Hero will incorporate elements of social media into the fabric of the series, allowing viewers to vote for who they deem “most heroic” each week (imagine if The Avengers had to put up with this: “Earth, who do you think put in the most effort to save your asses this time around?”)

Michael Wright, the head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic, recently told THR:

“The Hero is a great fit for TNT’s drama fans, whether they enjoy stories with a lot of action, suspense and danger or stories that offer inspiration through the heroic actions of everyday people. We’re also very excited about the extensive social-media aspect of The Hero, which will engage viewers on an entirely new level and develop a strong emotional investment in the competitors and challenges.”

The series is set to premiere in January.  Johnson is currently filming the sequel Fast & Furious 6 in London.
